The fit notebook

A good gift starts with a fit they love.

A size label is a starting point. The shirt they reach for every Saturday tells you much more. Use a similar garment as your reference and you can keep the surprise without leaving the fit entirely to chance.

Borrow the right kind of favorite.

Choose a garment the recipient already wears comfortably, with their permission or help from someone who knows their wardrobe. Match the category you plan to buy: a T-shirt for a tee, a sweatshirt for a crewneck. A stretchy fitted top is a poor reference for a roomy woven-feeling tee, even if both labels say medium.

Notice what they like about it. Is the shoulder relaxed? Does the hem sit near the hip? Is there room for a layer underneath? Write those preferences down before you compare measurements. If you cannot find a reliable reference, asking for measurements is better than turning a surprise into an uncomfortable fit.

Measure flat, without stretching.

Lay the reference piece on a flat surface and smooth it gently. Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, then measure length using the start and end points shown in the product’s guide. Check sleeves for long-sleeved styles. Keep the tape straight and record the units.

A flat width is one side of the garment, not a body chest measurement. Do not compare a 21-inch garment width directly with a 42-inch body circumference. Use the same measurement method on both sides of your comparison, and read any tolerance note in the chart.

  • Use inches with inches, or centimeters with centimeters.
  • Compare the garment, not just the size letter.
  • Check width and length together.

Let the numbers describe the fit.

Find the chart measurements closest to the reference garment. If the recipient wants more room, compare against a piece they already wear that way instead of automatically adding one size. Brands and cuts differ; a boxy tee and a fitted tank distribute that room differently.

Finally, check the selected garment, color and size on the product page and again in the bag. Read the made-to-order returns information before buying, especially for a personalized gift. Keep the product’s care directions with the gift so washing follows the garment and print requirements.

The helpful little details

Your questions, answered.

Is a flat chest width the same as a chest circumference?

No. A flat width measures across one side of the garment. Compare it with a flat measurement taken the same way, and follow the diagram on the chosen product’s size guide.

Should I order the recipient’s usual size?

Use it as a starting point, then check the exact garment’s size chart against a similar item that fits. The same size label can have different measurements across brands and styles.

What if I am between two sizes?

Compare both the width and length with the reference garment and consider the fit the recipient prefers. Contact us with the exact product and measurements if you need help choosing.
